The replica FIFA World Cup trophy kissed and raised by Lionel Messi during Argentina’s title celebrations in Lusail on 18 December 2022 is set to go under the hammer at Richmond Auctions’ inaugural Sports Memorabilia Auction on Saturday, 7 November 2026.
The trophy is not the official FIFA version but a high-quality replica that made its way from the stands onto the pitch during the post-match euphoria following Argentina’s penalty shootout victory over France — the country’s first World Cup triumph in 36 years. Messi’s image holding the trophy aloft became the most-liked post in Instagram history.
During the celebrations in Qatar, the replica was passed between Argentina players for approximately 45 minutes and signed by eight members of the squad before the night was over. Among the autographs are those of final goalscorer Angel Di Maria, Lautaro Martinez, Leandro Paredes, and Guido Rodriguez.
The winning bidder will also receive a 2022 Panini Instant Lionel Messi #118 FIFA World Cup Qatar trading card, graded PSA 10 GEM MINT, which depicts Messi holding the same replica trophy — directly linking the two collectibles to the same celebrated moment.
The wider auction features more than 360 lots, including a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card and a rare 1-of-10 Michael Jordan autograph card, making it a significant event on the sports memorabilia calendar.
