Rio Ferdinand has declared Arsenal the Premier League title favourites for 2026/27 after the club agreed a £51 million deal to sign Aston Villa centre-back Ezri Konsa, calling the transfer ‘a magnificent signing’ and ‘an absolute steal in today’s market’.

Konsa, 28, is set to become Arsenal’s fifth summer signing after a fee was agreed with Villa on Wednesday, having seen a £30 million bid rejected earlier in the window. Villa had initially valued the England international at £60 million before both clubs found a compromise ahead of the new season.

The defender addresses an immediate need at the Emirates, with William Saliba currently sidelined through injury. Ferdinand highlighted Konsa’s versatility as a key factor, noting Arsenal’s depth issues at both centre-back and right-back following fitness concerns involving Ben White and Jurrien Timber.

“There’s no frills about him. He’s a solid, really, really, really good Premier League defender,” Ferdinand said. “You’ve got Ben White, who seems fit now, but has had injuries in the right-back area. You’ve got Timber, who hasn’t been able to stay fit as well, and William Saliba’s injury concerns as well. He’s going to be great cover — someone who can come in there and just play straight away, no questions asked.”

Ferdinand was equally emphatic about the deal’s implications for the title race. “If you go and get him, that just reinforces why I think Arsenal are going to go and win the league again, because it’s a sensible and very good signing,” he added, dismissing the chances of Manchester City, Liverpool, and Manchester United overhauling Arteta’s squad.

Konsa will join Piero Hincapie, Illan Meslier, Christos Tzolis, and Bruno Guimaraes as Arsenal’s summer arrivals. The club is still pursuing further reinforcements in attack — Julian Alvarez of Atletico Madrid remains a target after Vinicius Junior committed his future to Real Madrid.

Arteta’s side open their title defence against newly-promoted Coventry City on Friday night.
