Felder reveals Barcelos collapse at UFC Vegas 121 left him fearing a heart attack cageside

Paul Felder feared he was watching a fighter die when Raoni Barcelos collapsed unconscious during the UFC Vegas 121 main event on Saturday, calling the incident “by far the scariest thing” he has experienced in his career as a commentator.

Barcellos appeared to suffer a medical episode in the fifth round of his bantamweight fight against Raul Rosas Jr. while Rosas was working a takedown — going limp without any apparent significant strike to cause it. Rosas immediately stepped away, and the on-site medical team rushed in, but Barcelos remained unconscious for several minutes before being stretchered out and taken to a local hospital.

“His neck was all clinched up, and he was unconscious,” Felder said on the Believe You Me podcast. “And it looked like he was — I thought he had a heart attack, off the bat. Then they came in, and they checked his pulse, which was terrifying to see. I have never seen somebody that was KO’d, where they come in and the first thing they did, the doctor put his fingers right on Raoni’s pulse. I was like, ‘Oh, this is really bad.’”.

Felder, who was seated cageside for the broadcast, said the prolonged unconsciousness set this apart from any knockout he had previously witnessed. “I’ve seen some nasty knockouts, guys out for a while, but they come to,” he said. “To see somebody where the doctors are checking your pulse, it just kind of really puts it in perspective, too, what this sport is at its roots.”

Several hours after the incident, Barcelos’ coach provided an update confirming the 39-year-old was conscious, lucid, and mobile. No official medical explanation for the episode has been released, though further details are expected in the coming days.

Felder, while relieved by the positive update, said he hopes Barcelos considers retirement regardless of what the tests ultimately reveal. “They should give Raoni, like, another five [hundred thousand] on top of [the Fight of the Night bonus] for whatever, because that might be it for him,” Felder said. “I think, no matter what, I’d love to see him retire. Hey, your body gave out on you to some degree. Unless it comes back that it was just some fluke thing, but to get rushed to the trauma center, and you’re 39?”

Felder also acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the cause as an added layer of concern. “There’s still just so many questions out there on what really went down, and if they even know,” he said. “That’s the scarier part: what if they can’t even pinpoint it.”
