Rinya Nakamura tapped to a rear-naked choke from Brady Hiestand in the second round of their bantamweight contest at UFC Vegas 121 on 26 September in Las Vegas, a sobering loss for a fighter who entered the bout as a heavy -325 favourite.

Hiestand’s wrestling was the decisive factor. Nakamura, who carried a record of 10-2 into the fight, was controlled throughout before being forced to submit — a result that extended his recent slide to two defeats in his last three UFC outings.

In a post shared on Instagram shortly after the event, Nakamura left no ambiguity about his state of mind. “I will return having forged a martial arts style that is purer, more righteous, more beautiful, and stronger,” the 31-year-old wrote. “Thank you, UFC, for the ultimate stage. I refuse to ever experience a feeling like this again.”

The loss carries particular weight given where Nakamura started his UFC journey. Nicknamed “Hybrid”, he arrived in the promotion as an undefeated prospect after winning the bantamweight bracket of Road to UFC Season 1 in 2023, widely regarded as one of the more promising fighters to emerge from that competition. His UFC record now stands at 3-2, and the defeats have come against opponents who have exposed gaps in his grappling defence.

Nakamura’s public vow signals a willingness to confront those weaknesses rather than deflect from them — a response that, whatever its outcome, underlines the scale of the setback he feels the Hiestand defeat represents.
