Failed Transfer Window, 15th Place: RC Lens Sinks Into a Double-Layered Crisis

RC Lens is experiencing an alarming start to the season: five Ligue 1 matches played, 15th place in the standings, and a summer transfer window without a single identifiable success. The assessment, drawn up by L’Équipe during the international break, is damning: among the eighteen top-flight clubs, only Marseille — which signed no one — and Lens cannot boast a single “top” in their recruitment record.

Yet the Artesian board had been active this summer. The objective was twofold: prepare for a Ligue des Champions season and compensate for the departures of several key players — Adrien Thomasson, Mamadou Sangaré, Malang Sarr, Wesley Saïd and Allan Saint-Maximin. Yacine Titraoui, Michal Skoras, Michaël Cuisance, Franjo Ivanovic, Thorgan Hazard, Maik Nawrocki, Junior Kadile and Jean-Clair Todibo thus joined the club. None has yet established himself as an undisputed starter.

There are mitigating circumstances: Nawrocki suffered an injury, Todibo has only just arrived. But they are not enough to mask the scale of the problem. L’Équipe designates Thorgan Hazard as the emblematic flop of Lens’s transfer window. Returning to Racing after his contract with Anderlecht ended, the Belgian has earned only one start since the beginning of the season. During the trip to Monaco — a 1-2 defeat in the last round — his appearance off the bench seemed beneficial, but the final result illustrated the club’s persistent difficulties.

Pressure does not rest solely on the new signings. The integration of Dino Toppmöller, successor to Pierre Sage on the bench, is also struggling to produce results. It is now up to Yannick Cahuzac and the staff to find the levers to revive players who, on paper, had been recruited to raise the level of the squad.
