Evra tells Man United Luke Shaw's time is 'gone' and urges £60m Hall signing

Patrice Evra has publicly called time on Luke Shaw’s Manchester United career, urging the club to pursue Newcastle left-back Lewis Hall — valued at around £60 million — before the transfer window closes on September 1.

Shaw, 30, drew sharp criticism for his performance in United’s 2-0 Premier League defeat to promoted Hull City, a result that has heaped early pressure on manager Michael Carrick. Evra, who spent nine years at Old Trafford before leaving in 2014, said his former teammate’s persistent injury record has left a lasting psychological mark.

“Luke Shaw, I love you, but it’s going to be a tough season for him,” Evra said. “He’s been at the club for years, he’s had a lot of injuries that killed his football career. When I talk with him, he’s still traumatised by them — he wouldn’t go 100 per cent into every challenge.”

Evra was unambiguous about his conclusion. “I have to tell the truth. Man United fans want to hear my opinion, and I think his time has gone. If Luke Shaw can give me a 35-game season, then that’s a good season — but if he doesn’t play at least 35 games in a row, Man United fans will go crazy.”

Carrick has invested heavily in midfield reinforcements this summer but has yet to address left-back, a position Evra identified as the squad’s most pressing weakness. United have been consistently linked with Hall, the Newcastle and England defender, though no formal approach has been made.

Evra backed Hall as the right profile for the role, even after the 20-year-old conceded a penalty against Liverpool at St James’ Park last weekend. “He gives you 90 minutes, guaranteed — that’s the kind of left-back Man United need,” he said.

The Champions League winner also reflected on the broader decline of the position since his own departure, suggesting no one has truly nailed down the role in the decade since. In his view, Ashley Young came closest to providing consistent cover — a damning assessment of the club’s recruitment in that area over the years.
