Michael Carrick’s tenure as Manchester United manager is hanging by a thread after a 2-0 defeat at Chelsea on Saturday left him without a victory in nine consecutive matches across all competitions.

United were the better side in the first half at Stamford Bridge and would have led at the break had Matheus Cunha not been ruled fractionally offside after tapping in from close range. The game turned sharply after the interval when Morgan Rogers cut through United’s backline and scooped a composed finish over goalkeeper Senne Lammens to open the scoring.

Any hope of a comeback was extinguished when Lisandro Martinez shoved Wesley Fofana to the ground while marking him, earning a second yellow card and reducing United to ten men. Cole Palmer stepped up to convert the resulting penalty, squeezing his effort past Lammens, and Chelsea eased to a comfortable victory.

Carrick’s body language at the final whistle spoke volumes. When Martinez was dismissed, the United manager refused to look up from his notebook, keeping his head down as he spoke with his coaching staff. He later approached the travelling United supporters — as he has done in recent weeks — and received a warm reception, though disappointment was visible on his face. Bruno Fernandes was met with a noticeably cooler response from the away end, one week after he publicly criticised Carrick’s tactics following a 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como.

The result follows a 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth last weekend and extends a run that has placed Carrick under severe pressure from the club’s hierarchy. Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann have both been linked with the vacancy, though reports emerging on Saturday suggested Nagelsmann has been contacted by Juventus, potentially complicating United’s pursuit of the German coach.

United’s season is threatening to unravel rapidly, with the combination of a leaky defence, a dressing room showing signs of tension, and a manager running out of time to arrest the slide.
