Espen Eskas to referee Ronaldo vs Modric in World Cup last-32 clash in Toronto
Norwegian official Espen Eskas will take charge of Portugal vs Croatia in Toronto, a World Cup Round of 32 tie that could mark the final appearance for either Cristiano Ronaldo or Luka Modric at the tournament.
Norwegian referee Espen Eskas has been appointed to officiate Portugal vs Croatia in Toronto, a World Cup Round of 32 fixture that doubles as a potential farewell for one of football’s great veterans — either Cristiano Ronaldo or Luka Modric will see their tournament end tonight.
Eskas, 37, makes his second on-pitch appearance at this World Cup having previously refereed Uruguay’s group-stage draw against Cape Verde. He was also present as fourth official during Scotland’s 3-0 defeat to Brazil, the result that eliminated the Scots from the competition.
Despite being younger than both Ronaldo and Modric, Eskas is an experienced operator at the highest level. He primarily referees in Norway’s top division but has also taken charge of Champions League fixtures and served as a fourth official at Euro 2024.
Eskas will be flanked by his Norwegian compatriots Jan Erik Engan and Isaak Bashevkin as assistant referees on the touchlines. South African pair Abongile Tom and Zakhele Siwela complete the officiating team, with Tom serving as fourth official.
Portugal reached the last 32 by winning one of their three group-stage matches, while Croatia advanced after beating both Panama and Ghana, having opened their campaign with a 4-2 defeat to England.
The match in Toronto is the final World Cup fixture to be held in the Canadian city, adding another layer of occasion to what is already a heavyweight knockout tie between two of the tournament’s most decorated nations.
