England's potential World Cup quarter-final date and venue confirmed ahead of Mexico last-16 tie
If England defeat Mexico in their last-16 clash at the Azteca Stadium, they will face either Brazil or Norway in a quarter-final at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday, 11 June at 10pm UK time.
England’s potential World Cup quarter-final has been confirmed for Saturday, 11 June, at 10pm UK time, with Hard Rock Stadium in Miami set to host the match — provided the Three Lions overcome Mexico in their last-16 tie at the Azteca Stadium, which kicks off at 1am Monday morning UK time.
Should Gareth Southgate’s side progress, they will face the winner of Brazil versus Norway, a round-of-16 fixture scheduled for 9pm UK time on Sunday. Brazil have been underwhelming in the tournament but remain unbeaten, while Norway — spearheaded by Erling Haaland — have impressed throughout, suffering only one defeat, against France.
England’s record against their potential opponents makes for contrasting reading. Against Brazil, the Three Lions have won just four of 27 meetings, with their last victory coming in a 2013 friendly. Brazil have won 12 of those encounters, and their most recent World Cup meeting came in the 2002 quarter-finals, where Ronaldinho’s famous lob over David Seaman sealed a 2-1 win for the eventual champions. Against Norway, however, England hold a far more comfortable record: seven wins, three draws and two defeats from ten meetings, the last of which was a 1-0 friendly victory in 2014.
Hard Rock Stadium is not unfamiliar territory for England. The venue has hosted the Three Lions twice before, both in friendlies — a 2-2 draw with Ecuador in their penultimate warm-up before the 2014 World Cup, and a 0-0 stalemate against Honduras shortly afterwards.
Before any quarter-final planning can begin in earnest, England must first navigate a formidable challenge in Mexico City. The co-hosts have won 70 of their 89 matches at the iconic Azteca Stadium, and the venue’s altitude of approximately 2,200 metres presents a unique physical test for visiting sides.
