England's World Cup last-16 clash with Mexico delayed by electrical storm at Azteca
England's World Cup 2026 last-16 tie against Mexico at the Azteca Stadium has been pushed back at least one hour after an electrical storm forced fans to seek cover and delayed both teams' arrivals.
England’s round-of-16 match against Mexico at the Azteca Stadium has been delayed by at least one hour after a severe electrical storm struck the venue, with kick-off pushed from 6pm to 7pm local time (2am BST), with the possibility of further postponement.
Heavy rain, thunder, and lightning prevented supporters from entering the stadium and disrupted both teams’ travel to the ground. The Azteca’s electrical storm protocol was activated, directing fans and officials to seek shelter until conditions improved.
The delay adds an anxious wait for both nations, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake. The winner will face Norway on Saturday after the Scandinavians knocked out Brazil 2-1 in their own last-16 tie.
