England fans party until dawn after Bellingham and Kane seal 3-2 thriller against Mexico
England supporters across the country celebrated deep into the night after the Three Lions beat Mexico 3-2 in a dramatic World Cup clash at the Azteca, with pubs permitted to stay open until 5am under a special government extension.
England fans were still celebrating as the sun came up after the Three Lions delivered a 3-2 World Cup victory over Mexico at the Azteca stadium, with Jude Bellingham scoring twice and Harry Kane converting a penalty to seal a hard-fought win.
Thomas Tuchel’s side overcame a red card in the 54th minute, a controversial penalty decision and 11 minutes of stoppage time to hold on for the result. A lightning storm had already delayed kick-off by an hour, testing the patience of supporters at home who had gathered at pubs and fan parks across England.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer had declared a special one-off relaxation of licensing laws ahead of the match, allowing pubs in England and Wales to remain open until 5am. The blanket extension meant individual venues did not need to apply separately for extended hours — a move that followed calls from MPs for leeway beyond the 2am extensions already in place for England’s earlier World Cup fixtures.
At Wembley’s BoxPark, fans roared on every moment of the game and erupted when Bellingham struck twice in quick succession in the first half, with plastic pints flying and CO2 cannons blasting white fog into the air. Supporters spontaneously broke into a chorus of Sweet Caroline as the celebrations took hold.
Similar scenes played out at fan parks in Leeds, Manchester and Newcastle, where confetti fell and shirtless supporters embraced as England held on for the win.
At Wembley, Ollie, 29, who declined to give his surname, joked he would be “very ill” in a few hours when he needed to go to work. “Luckily my manager is also ill,” he said. “The win was a long time coming.”
Fans at The Clock pub in Hebburn, Tyne and Wear were also pictured celebrating in their England shirts, among the thousands of supporters across the country who stayed up through the night to watch the match.
