Ederson's £35m Manchester United move on track despite World Cup medical delay
Manchester United have agreed a £35m fee plus add-ons for Atalanta midfielder Ederson, but a late Brazil call-up has prevented him from completing his medical. The deal remains firmly in place following Brazil's World Cup exit.
Manchester United’s move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson remains firmly on track despite no official announcement, with the £35m deal delayed solely by the player’s late call-up to the Brazil national team for the 2026 World Cup.
United agreed a fee of £35m plus £3.8m in add-ons for the midfielder, who has also signed off on a four-year contract at Old Trafford. The absence of a formal announcement prompted claims in Brazil that the transfer had collapsed, but those reports are wide of the mark.
Ederson was drafted into Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil squad as a late replacement for injured midfielder Wesley, leaving him unavailable to complete his medical with United. That obstacle has now cleared following Brazil’s 2-1 defeat to Norway in the World Cup round of 16 on Sunday, which ended their tournament.
The expectation had been that Ederson would be confirmed as a United player in early July before the international call-up intervened. He is now set to take a short break before completing the formalities, though a precise date for his medical has not been confirmed.
Ederson is expected to be United’s first signing of the summer transfer window, and sources close to the deal indicate there is no concern that it will fall through. The four-year contract already agreed by the player underlines the mutual commitment between club and midfielder.
