UEFA denounces FIFA's "unjustifiable" decision on Balogun suspension
UEFA issued a scathing statement on Monday condemning FIFA's decision to lift the suspension of American striker Folarin Balogun before the United States' round-of-16 match against Belgium at the 2026 World Cup, calling the decision "incomprehensible and unjustifiable".
UEFA officially took a stand on Monday against FIFA, denouncing in an unusually harsh statement the global body’s decision to lift the suspension of Folarin Balogun before the round-of-16 match of the 2026 World Cup between the United States and Belgium in Seattle.
The American striker from AS Monaco received a red card during the group stage match against Bosnia, which should have automatically ruled him out of the round-of-16. FIFA, however, invoked a little-known regulatory article to suspend this sanction, a decision widely interpreted as a concession to pressure exerted by Donald Trump.
“Football, like any other sport, is built on rules, the foundations of fair, honest and transparent competition. While some rules may sometimes be open to interpretation, this is not the case here. The automatic suspension of a minimum match following a red card is not a discretionary option and does not require the decision of a competent body to be implemented,” recalled the European confederation led by Aleksander Ceferin.
UEFA believes a “red line” has been crossed. In its statement, it emphasizes that this regulatory principle “cannot be subject to exceptions, especially during a tournament, when several other players found themselves in the same situation and served their suspension without issue”. The continental body sees in this matter a “threat to the integrity of the game and the credibility of the competition”, and warns that “similar situations will henceforth require identical treatment, to the detriment of the competition”.
The Belgian Federation has already filed a formal appeal against FIFA’s decision. UEFA, although placed under FIFA’s direct supervision, did not hesitate to describe the decision as “unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable”, a rare level of confrontation between the two bodies.
