Mike Malott will headline UFC Edmonton against Joaquin Buckley at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, on October 17, marking his second consecutive main event in Canada and a milestone he was repeatedly told he would never reach.

Malott, who defeated Gilbert Burns in the main event of UFC Winnipeg in April, reflected on a childhood defined by skepticism about his fighting ambitions. Smaller than most of his peers and attending a private school, he says the people around him were blunt about his prospects.

“It’s probably kind of odd for people who knew me growing up to see this,” Malott said in a pre-fight interview. “I was kind of the runt of my year as, you know, smaller than like almost every other kid growing up. ‘You go to a private school; you’re not going to be a UFC fighter. It’s not happening.’”

Rather than dwelling on those doubts, Malott says gratitude has become a cornerstone of his preparation and mindset as he competes at the sport’s highest level.

“This isn’t guaranteed for anyone,” he added. “This was never guaranteed for me. This isn’t gifted to me. So, gratitude is a huge part of my process and just staying present.”

The headlining slot against Buckley gives Malott a chance to build on the momentum of his Winnipeg performance and further cement his standing in the UFC’s welterweight division. For a fighter who spent years being told the dream was unrealistic, the Rogers Place main event represents both a personal and professional landmark.
