Doku criticizes Garcia: "We shouldn't start making things up"
A month after Belgium's World Cup quarter-final elimination by Spain, Manchester City winger Jérémy Doku has publicly criticized his former coach Rudi Garcia's tactical choices.
Jérémy Doku has not gotten over certain decisions made by Rudi Garcia during the World Cup. The Manchester City winger has publicly questioned his coach’s management, a month after the Red Devils’ quarter-final elimination against Spain.
“When I look at the match against Egypt or many other matches, I wasn’t always put in the best conditions,” said the former Stade Rennais player. The Belgian international notably points out that he was deployed on the right, or even up front in some matches, when his natural position is clearly left winger. “Everyone knows that’s where I’m best. We shouldn’t start making things up,” he added.
These criticisms come after a mixed tournament for Doku, who also mentions an injury that complicated his competition. The 22-year-old player acknowledges, however, that the collective result remains positive. “We reached the quarter-finals. That’s a success in terms of the team,” he conceded.
Rudi Garcia, for his part, left his position as Belgium coach after the tournament, taking pride in being the only team to score against the future world champion Spanish. Doku’s statements nonetheless tarnish this record and reignite the debate over the management of individual players within the Red Devils during the competition.
