Carrick's pre-match history lesson fires Manchester United to battling draw at Leeds
Michael Carrick addressed his Manchester United squad on Sunday morning about the history and significance of the Leeds fixture before they earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw at Elland Road.
Michael Carrick delivered a passionate pre-match address to his Manchester United players on Sunday morning, speaking about the history of the fixture with Leeds and what it means to supporters, before United earned a 1-1 draw at Elland Road.
The interim manager’s words appeared to have the desired effect, with United matching the aggression and intensity of Daniel Farke’s side throughout a combative contest. The result came just days after United’s defeat in Madrid, and Carrick acknowledged the mood around the squad had shifted noticeably in the build-up.
“The last couple of days has been as good around the group and the feeling in the way the boys have gone about it as we’ve had for quite some time really, and I was looking forward to the game today to see that,” Carrick said after the final whistle.
Carrick was candid about the message he delivered to his players before kick-off, framing the trip across the Pennines as a test of character as much as football ability. “I spoke to the boys this morning a little bit about what the game is, the history and what it means to the supporters, to the football club, to us coming over here into the territory, to kind of what it takes to win here and get a result,” he explained.
The United manager was under no illusions about the atmosphere his side would face at Elland Road, where hostility towards the visitors is rarely disguised. He suggested the environment itself acts as a filter for a team’s resolve. “It definitely tests you if you come here and you’re not quite there. It tests what you’re going to bring.”
While Carrick stopped short of claiming it was a polished display, he was satisfied with the collective effort. “It wasn’t a perfect performance, it wasn’t our most unbelievable performance, but there was definitely a lot in there that you can show how together the group were and how determined they were to get something today.”
The draw keeps United’s away record intact for the trip but leaves questions about their attacking quality, with the game short on clear-cut moments despite the high tempo. Carrick’s ability to galvanise the dressing room in difficult circumstances, however, will be noted as he continues in caretaker charge.
