Militão returns to Real Madrid squad for Sevilla but faces limited role at Bernabéu

Éder Militão is back in Real Madrid’s squad for the first time since his injury layoff, included in José Mourinho’s 23-man group for Sunday’s La Liga fixture against Sevilla at the Santiago Bernabéu on 18 October.

His return to the squad is the headline development in the announcement, but both Managing Madrid and ESPN reported that the club intend to manage his involvement carefully. The expectation is that Militão will not start, with a brief late appearance only considered if Real Madrid have built a comfortable lead by that stage of the match.

The distinction between squad inclusion and match readiness is significant here. Being named in the group gives Mourinho an additional senior defensive option, but it does not signal that Militão is prepared for a full workload. The decision on whether he features at all will depend on how the game unfolds.

Real Madrid’s full 23-man squad lists eight defenders, with Militão joined by Dean Huijsen, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ibrahima Konaté, Marc Cucurella, Álvaro Carreras, Antonio Rüdiger and Denzel Dumfries. Thibaut Courtois, Andriy Lunin and Javi Navarro make up the goalkeeping options.

The midfield group includes Jude Bellingham, Eduardo Camavinga, Federico Valverde, Aurélien Tchouaméni, Arda Güler, Bernardo Silva and Thiago Pitarch, while the forward line features Kylian Mbappé, Endrick, Brahim Díaz, Carlos Espí and Yan Diomande.

For Militão, Sunday’s call-up represents a return to the match group rather than a confirmed comeback on the pitch. A straightforward win for the hosts would create the most plausible opening for the limited minutes that have been outlined — but Mourinho has left the decision open to the circumstances of the evening.
