Cyborg accuses Shields of quitting MMA because it was 'too hard' and predicts first-round finish

Cris Cyborg has publicly attacked Claressa Shields on social media, claiming the two-time Olympic boxing champion abandoned MMA in 2021 because the sport was too demanding, and insisting she would stop Shields in the first round if they ever met in the cage.

Cris Cyborg launched a pointed social media attack on Claressa Shields on October 27, 2026, accusing the boxing champion of walking away from mixed martial arts because the challenge proved too great — and warning she would finish Shields inside a round if the two ever competed in the cage.

“Claressa quit MMA because it was too hard and went back to boxing,” Cyborg wrote on X. The Brazilian added that Shields, who made her MMA debut in 2021, could have reached purple or brown belt level in Brazilian jiu-jitsu had she stayed with the sport.

Cyborg also drew a pointed statistical comparison, noting that Shields had competed in just eight boxing bouts since returning to the sweet science — the same number of boxing fights Cyborg herself claims to have had while simultaneously holding an MMA world title. “She picks and chooses the easiest road possible,” Cyborg concluded.

The following day, Cyborg escalated her rhetoric further. “I would beat Claressa Shields in MMA without throwing a punch,” she posted. “145lbs vs 175lbs and she still loses in the first round. It would be ugly. She might never fight again.”

The rivalry between the two combat sports stars stretches back several years. Shields has previously claimed she got the better of Cyborg during a sparring session in 2018, and both have repeatedly discussed the possibility of a professional boxing match. In August, Shields alleged that Cyborg had turned down a $2 million offer to fight at 154 pounds. Despite the prolonged back-and-forth, no professional contest between the pair has been agreed.
