Curfew and closed doors possible: PSG-Barça Champions League clash threatened by Paris violence
Urban violence that erupted in Paris over the weekend could force the PSG vs FC Barcelona Champions League match scheduled for Tuesday at Parc des Princes to be played behind closed doors or even affected by a curfew. While Interior Minister Laurent Nunez ruled out postponement, the conditions under which the match could be held remain highly uncertain.
The Matchday 3 Champions League clash between PSG and FC Barcelona, scheduled for Tuesday evening at Parc des Princes, is directly threatened by the urban violence that engulfed Paris over the weekend. While postponement is not on the agenda, the conditions under which the match could take place remain highly uncertain.
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez formally ruled out any postponement during a press briefing held Monday at Matignon. “The question does not arise for the match between Paris-Saint-Germain and FC Barcelona, nor for other matches that may take place in European competition, notably in Lille,” he stated, stressing that “matches are not being called into question.”
But the question of playing conditions remains wide open. Within the Interior Ministry, the idea of a curfew — which would effectively result in a closed-door match at Parc des Princes — is gaining traction. Laurent Nunez himself acknowledged “a loss of control” against the rioters and looters who wreaked havoc Saturday and Sunday on the margins of protests.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu did not rule out imposing a state of emergency “if necessary,” while judging curfews “more appropriate” at this stage. He specified that “partial and localized” curfews had already been requested from prefects to protect shops in particular. “French people, watching from their televisions, think it’s chaos everywhere. Fortunately, no, we have chaos that is very localized in urban centers,” he clarified.
Based on the assessment from Monday night to Tuesday and decisions made in consultation between prefects and mayors, new restrictive measures could be adopted and directly impact the PSG-Barça match. In Spain, Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo headlined Monday on “a Paris in flames awaiting Barça,” a sign that concern extends well beyond French borders.
