Barcelona push to sign Bruno Fernandes from struggling Manchester United in January
Barcelona have emerged as strong contenders to sign Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes in the January transfer window, with the 32-year-old reportedly frustrated by the club's 13th-place Premier League standing and open to an exit.
Barcelona are pushing to sign Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes in the January transfer window, according to reports from Fanatik, with the 32-year-old said to be unhappy at Old Trafford as the club sit 13th in the Premier League under manager Michael Carrick.
Fernandes, who broke the Premier League assist record during the 2025-26 season, is reportedly open to leaving the club he captains, with his contract expiring next summer ahead of the 2027-28 campaign. Manchester United do hold an option to extend that deal by a further year, but the report suggests they may struggle to retain him if Barcelona’s interest is firm.
Galatasaray are also in contention for the Portuguese midfielder. The Turkish club, who have previously attempted to sign Fernandes, are chasing a fifth consecutive Super Lig title and are keen to add a player of his calibre. However, the report indicates that the prospect of joining Hansi Flick’s Barcelona side — reigning La Liga champions with credible Champions League ambitions — is likely to prove the more attractive proposition for Fernandes.
The situation at United has been further complicated by public tensions within the squad. Lisandro Martinez recently made pointed post-match comments directed at unnamed figures in the club’s hierarchy, adding to the sense of unrest at Old Trafford.
At 32, Fernandes is entering the final stretch of his peak years, and the report frames a potential move as his clearest remaining route to winning major honours, including the Champions League — a prize that currently looks out of reach at United.
Should Fernandes depart in January, it would represent a significant blow to Carrick’s rebuilding project, stripping the side of its captain and record-breaking creative force mid-season.
