Coventry City target free transfer for Tuanzebe as Lampard builds Premier League squad
Newly promoted Coventry City are weighing up a free transfer move for Burnley defender Axel Tuanzebe, whose contract expires this summer. The DR Congo international, 28, caught the eye during Burnley's relegated season and is currently at the World Cup.
Coventry City are monitoring Axel Tuanzebe as a free-transfer option this summer, with the Burnley centre-back’s contract set to expire and manager Frank Lampard prioritising defensive reinforcements ahead of the club’s Premier League return.
Tuanzebe, 28, came through Manchester United’s academy and made his senior debut at 19, most memorably shackling Kylian Mbappé as United beat PSG 2-1 in the Champions League. His career since then has taken in loan spells at Aston Villa, Napoli and Stoke City before a permanent move to Ipswich Town in 2023, where he contributed to their promotion from the Championship.
After Ipswich’s relegation from the Premier League, Tuanzebe joined Burnley, where he made 14 appearances in an injury-disrupted campaign as the Clarets finished 19th. Despite the limited game time, he showed his quality in flashes — recording 19 clearances in a 1-1 draw against Liverpool in January and scoring in a 2-2 draw against Tottenham.
Burnley manager Mike Jackson has spoken warmly of the defender ahead of his departure. “I think he’s been really strong. He’s going to the World Cup… but he’s come in after not being available enough for us this season. That’s disappointing because I think he can make a difference with the profile that he’s got in the Premier League,” Jackson said.
Tuanzebe is currently on international duty with DR Congo, having played a central role in their World Cup qualification. In March, he scored a dramatic extra-time winner against Jamaica in a play-off to secure his nation’s place at the tournament.
The Sky Blues have already made one addition this summer, with Frank Onyeka signing permanently after a loan spell at the Coventry Building Society Arena. A centre-back remains high on Lampard’s list of priorities, and Tuanzebe’s Premier League experience and availability on a free transfer make him an attractive proposition as Coventry look to assemble a squad capable of surviving in the top flight.
