15-year-old JJ Gabriel hits UEFA Youth League hat-trick as Manchester United debut record looms

JJ Gabriel announced himself on the European stage with a hat-trick as Manchester United’s under-19 side dismantled Sabah FK U19 5-0 in the UEFA Youth League at Leigh Sports Village, further intensifying debate over when the 15-year-old will receive his senior debut.

The forward, who turns 16 in October, drove United’s youth team to a commanding victory and continued a remarkable run of form that saw him score 28 goals in 35 appearances for the club’s under-18 side last season. Since stepping up to the under-21s in Premier League 2 this term, Gabriel has added two goals and two assists in his first two outings before carrying that momentum into Europe.

Crucially, Gabriel met the Premier League’s academic year age requirement — a player must turn 15 on or before 31 August of a given season to be eligible for selection — ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, meaning a top-flight appearance is now permitted for the first time. Should manager Michael Carrick hand him a senior bow before his birthday in October, Gabriel would become Manchester United’s youngest-ever first-team player.

Carrick has been monitoring the teenager closely, regularly including him in first-team training sessions. Speaking last season, the United manager offered a measured assessment of the youngster’s development: “JJ is a big talent, it’s pretty obvious to know that and he’s had a really good season for the Under-18s. We obviously think an awful lot of him, but patience is important in managing everything that comes with that and working with him in development as we do with all the different younger players and picking the right moment to step up.”

Gabriel’s hat-trick against Sabah FK adds fresh urgency to that question of timing. With his eligibility confirmed and his form at youth level showing no signs of slowing, the pressure on Carrick to hand the academy prodigy his first-team opportunity will only grow as the season progresses.
