Chelsea sign Marco Palestra from Atalanta for £43m in Xabi Alonso's first transfer
Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Italian defender Marco Palestra from Atalanta on a seven-year deal worth more than £43million, beating Inter Milan to the 21-year-old's signature in Xabi Alonso's first confirmed transfer as Blues manager.
Chelsea have signed Marco Palestra from Atalanta on a seven-year deal for more than £43million, making the 21-year-old Italian defender the first confirmed arrival of the Xabi Alonso era at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues had monitored Palestra throughout last season as he impressed on loan at Cagliari, but Inter Milan appeared to be the frontrunners for much of the summer. Negotiations between Inter and Atalanta over a fee were already under way when Chelsea intervened with a superior offer, and personal terms were then agreed quickly.
Speaking to the club’s media after completing the move, Palestra said: “A lot of things convinced me to join Chelsea, one of the best clubs in the world. I’m very excited to get started. I’ve felt the energy since the first day Chelsea wanted me.”
The defender also referenced the influence of the new head coach directly: “We have so many talented players here, a very strong squad and manager in Xabi. He has spoken to me about how he wants us to play, which is exciting, and we can’t wait to compete in the Premier League.”
Palestra also posted an emotional farewell to Atalanta on Instagram, reflecting on eleven years at the club. “I came to Bergamo as a child. Atalanta was much more than a club: it’s where I grew up as a football player and as a person,” he wrote. “Thank you to the Percassi family, the managers, the coaches, the whole staff, my teammates and the fans for believing in me.”
Palestra is not expected to be the only new face at Chelsea this summer. Emmanuel Emegha, Valentin Barco, Geovany Quenda, and Dastan Satpayev are also set to join the club as further additions. On the outgoing side, Enzo Fernandez and Malo Gusto have been linked with Real Madrid and Manchester City respectively, while Marc Cucurella has already departed to join Jose Mourinho’s side.
