Free-agent Mahrez closes in on Qatar move to join ex-Arsenal defender Pablo Mari
Riyad Mahrez, 35, is reportedly set to sign for Qatari first-division side Al Shamal SC after spending several months as a free agent following the expiry of his Al Ahli contract. The move would reunite him with former Arsenal defender Pablo Mari.
Riyad Mahrez is closing in on a move to Qatari first-division club Al Shamal SC, according to reports, ending a spell as a free agent that has lasted several months since his departure from Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli.
The 35-year-old Algerian winger’s contract at Al Ahli expired at the end of last season, leaving him without a club since the summer. Al Shamal, who compete in Qatar’s top flight, are now reportedly on the verge of securing his signature on a long-term deal, though the precise length of the contract has not been confirmed.
Should the transfer be completed, Mahrez would link up with former Arsenal defender Pablo Mari, who joined Al Shamal in the summer after leaving the Gunners in 2023.
Mahrez spent five years at Manchester City before departing for Al Ahli in a deal worth up to £30 million in the summer of 2023. During his time at the Etihad Stadium, he scored 78 goals in 236 appearances and contributed to ten major trophies, among them three Premier League titles and the 2023 Champions League.
His stint in Saudi Arabia proved productive too — he registered 37 goals across 122 appearances for Al Ahli before his contract ran out.
The news comes as Manchester City face significant uncertainty off the pitch. An independent commission this week found the club guilty of 114 of the 115 financial breach charges brought against them by the Premier League. City have confirmed they have formally submitted an appeal against the verdict.
