Chelsea beat Brighton 4-3 on Sunday in the Premier League, securing a second consecutive win after their victory at Fulham (2-3) last Monday. Six points in two matches, plus a League Cup qualification: the record looks impressive, but the Blues’ defensive solidity is already a concern.

London’s attack fired on all cylinders from the opening stages. Romeo Lavia opened the scoring in the 4th minute, Pedro Neto doubled the lead in the 14th, and Joao Pedro extended the advantage to three goals in the 32nd. Cole Palmer, very prominent at the start of the season, added a fourth goal in the 74th minute.

But Chelsea suffered again at the back. Emiliano Martinez, who arrived in the London goal in recent days, conceded three goals: Yalcouye in the 35th minute, an own goal by Joao Pedro in the 53rd, then Gross in added time (90+6). Over the first two matches, the Blues have therefore conceded five goals in total.

The defensive sector remains clearly Xabi Alonso’s main priority. Next week, a trip to Arsenal will quickly test the solidity — and any potential improvements — of this team in reconstruction.
