Carvajal, Vlahovic and Goretzka among free agents Manchester United could target this summer
With midfield reinforcement a clear priority after Casemiro's departure, Manchester United are operating in a transfer market that includes several high-profile free agents — among them Real Madrid veterans Dani Carvajal and Dani Ceballos, Bayern Munich's Leon Goretzka, Raphael Guerreiro, and Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic.
Manchester United enter July with a clear transfer agenda under newly permanent manager Michael Carrick: strengthen the midfield, build on a promising second half of last season, and prepare for a return to Champions League football.
The start of the month traditionally unlocks a wave of out-of-contract talent, and this summer is no different. Several experienced names are now available on free transfers, offering Carrick cost-effective options to complement what is expected to be a backed window in the market.
Midfield the headline priority
Casemiro’s departure has left a visible gap in the centre of the pitch — one United have already moved to address by agreeing a deal for Atalanta’s Ederson. But the free-agent pool offers further depth. Leon Goretzka, 31, is available after seven Bundesliga titles in eight seasons at Bayern Munich and has previously been linked with Arsenal. Dani Ceballos, 29, is another option: the three-time Champions League winner left Real Madrid this summer and already has two Premier League loan spells at Arsenal on his CV, meaning he would require minimal adaptation time.
Raphael Guerreiro, 32, adds versatility — capable of playing at left-back or in midfield — having just departed Bayern Munich after three years. Reports have suggested he is weighing up retirement, but should he continue, his Champions League pedigree would be an asset.
Experienced options in defence and attack
At right-back, Dani Carvajal is on the market following his exit from Real Madrid after more than 450 appearances and six Champions League medals. The 34-year-old acknowledged his future is open, saying: “I’ll keep playing, that’s sure for me. We’ll see what the best options are for me and my family, and based on that, I’ll make the decision.”
In attack, Dusan Vlahovic represents perhaps the most intriguing name on the list. At 26, the Serbian striker is younger than the rest of the group and departs Juventus having scored 68 goals across four-and-a-half seasons in Turin. Whether United pursue him will depend on their broader attacking plans, but his age and output make him a credible target.
Building Carrick’s squad
Having been confirmed as manager on a permanent basis, Carrick is expected to shape the squad in his own image this summer. The availability of proven, experienced free agents gives United a chance to add quality without exhausting their transfer budget — particularly useful as they look to compete on multiple fronts next season.
