Jarrod Bowen’s name is circulating at Old Trafford as Manchester United weigh up a move for the West Ham captain following the Hammers’ relegation to the Championship — and manager Michael Carrick knows the crossroads better than most.

Carrick was himself relegated with West Ham in 2003, spent a season in the second tier, and eventually made his way to Tottenham before joining United. He has spoken at length about how that painful experience shaped his career, telling The Guardian in 2014: “I was relegated with West Ham and you never forget that. Going down, playing in the Championship, I constantly remind myself of that. I still remember the feeling, without doubt, I wouldn’t allow myself to forget it.”

“Those are the things that drive you on, that end up making you stronger,” Carrick added. “We have enjoyed a lot of success at Manchester United but each season has had its ups and downs. There have been certain times here through the years when we have had, say, two bad results on the spin and the roof caves in. You think everything is wrong but we have still gone on to achieve things.”

Bowen, 29, was unable to keep West Ham up despite contributing nine goals and 11 assists across the season. United are among several clubs reported to be monitoring the England international, though West Ham are said to be keen to retain him as they target an immediate return to the Premier League.

The financial reality at West Ham may complicate that ambition. The club reportedly need to raise around £100 million through player sales, a figure that could force their hand on Bowen despite his four years remaining on his current contract.

Bowen himself acknowledged on the final day of the season that speculation about his future was unavoidable. “I’m under contract here,” he said. “I’ve been here six and a half years, I’ve had some really high moments, and this is a low moment that will outweigh everything. There’s going to be rumours, there’s going to be talk.”

Whether Bowen follows Carrick’s path from east London to Manchester remains to be seen, but the parallel is hard to ignore — and Carrick, now in the United dugout, is well placed to make the case for what life after West Ham relegation can look like.
