Carrick's United need defensive reinforcements despite £415m spent over two summers

Manchester United have committed more than £415m to squad rebuilding across the past two summers under INEOS, yet the club’s hierarchy already acknowledges that further investment — this time in defence — will be required if the Reds are to establish themselves as genuine Premier League and European contenders.

The spending began in earnest last summer with a £232m overhaul of the forward line. Matheus Cunha arrived from Wolves for £62.5m, Bryan Mbeumo joined from Brentford in a deal worth up to £71m, and Benjamin Sesko completed the trio of marquee signings in a £74m move from RB Leipzig. Defensive cover was addressed more modestly, with goalkeeper Senne Lammens signed from Royal Antwerp for £18m and Diego Leon acquired for a fee that could reach £7m.

This summer, United shifted their focus to central midfield following Casemiro’s departure on a free transfer. Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos, and Carlos Baleba arrived for a combined £155m including potential add-ons, with Tynan Thompson adding further depth at a cost of up to £8m.

The backdrop to all of this spending has been significant managerial upheaval. Ruben Amorim, appointed in November to succeed Erik ten Hag, managed only a 15th-place Premier League finish in his maiden season before the board parted ways with him in January. Michael Carrick stepped in on an interim basis and guided the club to a third-place finish — a remarkable turnaround achieved without any input on the January transfer window. Carrick has since been handed a permanent contract.

With the attack and midfield now substantially reinforced, the emerging consensus within the club is that the backline represents the clearest gap in the squad. Carrick, who inherits a group largely assembled before his arrival, will have a full pre-season to assess his options, but the expectation is that defensive recruitment will define United’s next transfer window as they look to convert a promising league finish into a sustained title challenge.
