Carrick publicly contradicts Fernandes over tactics after Manchester United's 4-1 collapse at Como
Michael Carrick has pushed back against Bruno Fernandes' claim that a staff decision to avoid man-to-man pressing cost Manchester United in their 4-1 defeat at Como, insisting the approach was actually used in the second half — before United conceded again.
Michael Carrick directly contradicted his own captain Bruno Fernandes at a tense post-match press conference after Manchester United were beaten 4-1 by Como, a result that has deepened questions about the interim manager’s future at Old Trafford.
Fernandes had publicly attributed part of the defeat to a coaching staff decision to forgo man-to-man pressing, telling reporters: “It’s a decision from the staff to not press man to man and sometimes leave a bit of space in behind.” The Portuguese captain suggested that allowing Como time on the ball allowed Cesc Fabregas’ side to grow in confidence and left United’s legs and minds spent by the time they recovered possession.
Carrick was having none of it. “We actually half-pressed man-to-man the second half and then conceded a goal from that,” he said, directly disputing Fernandes’ account. He then shifted the focus to effort rather than system, adding: “Whatever system you play, whatever tactics you play, if you don’t run, and you don’t run forward, and you don’t run back, you ain’t going to win.”
The defeat is United’s ninth without a win in their last eleven matches, and Carrick did not shy away from accepting personal responsibility for the performance. “The way we went about it tonight, I wouldn’t say everyone, but the way we went about it in some ways tonight wasn’t acceptable,” he said. “It wasn’t just the goals, if I’m totally honest. It was the manner and the way we played at times.”
Carrick also addressed the supporters directly, insisting his commitment to the club is total. “It’s not about playing for me, it’s about playing for this football club,” he said. “I’m giving my best, absolute best all the time. My whole life’s wrapped around it.”
The public disagreement between manager and captain over in-game tactics is a rare and significant flashpoint, coming at a moment when United’s season is already in serious trouble. Whether Carrick remains in charge long enough to resolve the rift remains to be seen.
