Michael Carrick has insisted he has given no thought to his future as Manchester United manager following a 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como that left him on the brink and the club without a win in seven matches.

Cesc Fabregas’ side dismantled United in their third European outing of the season, a result that has placed Carrick’s position under serious scrutiny. Yet the former Red Devils midfielder was defiant when pressed on whether he was considering stepping down.

“I’ve not given my position any thought,” Carrick told reporters in his post-match press conference. “It’s [about] the supporters, I was one of them, and I didn’t like what I saw.”

Carrick accepted full blame for the manner of the defeat, taking “100 per cent responsibility” for the team’s display while also making clear his frustration at the level he witnessed. He apologised directly to the travelling supporters.

“I’m really angry but you’ve got to move on and deal with what’s next and see what that looks like,” he said. “At this moment in time, there’s a lot to do before the next game to get the team ready, because that was a difficult night for everybody.”

When asked whether he still expected backing from the club, Carrick was equally resolute. “It’s not about me,” he said. “It’s about what we all give — players, staff — for this football club. My whole life’s wrapped around it. I’m giving my absolute best all the time.”

Carrick also addressed criticism from Bruno Fernandes over United’s tactical approach, particularly their failure to press, which allowed Como time on the ball and left the visitors looking toothless in attack.

“We half pressed man-to-man in the second half and ended up conceding a goal from that,” Carrick said. “Whatever tactics you play, if you don’t run back, you ain’t going to win.”

United return to Premier League action on Sunday when they host Marco Rose’s Bournemouth, a side also struggling for form, in what has become a must-not-lose fixture for a manager whose tenure is increasingly under threat.
