Carrick hails Mainoo-Tielemans axis as Sesko fires United into Champions League

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick singled out the midfield partnership of Kobbie Mainoo and Youri Tielemans after a comfortable 3-0 Champions League victory over Sabah, with Benjamin Sesko adding to his recent goalscoring form on his first start of the season.

Carrick named the same central midfield pairing for the third consecutive match, and while both players were substituted at half-time with the result already secured, the United boss said the chemistry between them was becoming increasingly evident.

“Kobbie and Youri have played more minutes, and you can see the understanding,” Carrick said. “I think Youri settled in, and I thought he was really good tonight again. Kobbie’s just been really consistent all the way through, so we’ve got really good options in there.”

Mason Mount came on at the interval to make his first appearance of the season, while Andrey Santos also featured in the second half. Carrick was encouraged by all four midfield options, though the Mainoo-Tielemans combination is emerging as his preferred starting unit.

Sesko’s contribution was another highlight. The Slovenian striker had missed pre-season with a shin injury sustained late last term, but his return to full fitness is gathering momentum. He scored for the second successive game and Carrick was effusive about the specific qualities he brings.

“He definitely offers a different kind of threat,” Carrick said. “There’s not many around that kind of give you what Ben does in terms of his physique, his physicality, playing on the last line, his speed to run in behind. He’s a real threat. It’s great to have him back at this level.”

Bryan Mbeumo, who had scored in United’s two previous Premier League fixtures, did not find the net against Sabah, but Matheus Cunha marked the occasion with his first Champions League goal. Carrick acknowledged that selecting his attack is no straightforward task given the form across the squad.

“It’s not an easy decision. Of course it’s not, but it’s definitely one I’d prefer to have — goals in the team and for the boys to be playing well,” he said. “The understanding that they all have, that sometimes it’s going to be a start, sometimes it’s going to be finishing the game — we need that within the group.”

The win gives United a positive start to their Champions League campaign and reinforces the momentum Carrick has built since taking charge, with the team showing both defensive solidity and attacking variety across multiple positions.
