Carrick hails 'fantastic' Mainoo as United's midfield clicks in 4-0 Champions League rout

Michael Carrick lauded Kobbie Mainoo as a transformative force in Manchester United’s midfield after his side demolished Sabah 4-0 in the Champions League, marking the club’s return to European football’s top table in emphatic fashion.

Mainoo was among the standout performers for the second consecutive game, operating in a slightly deeper role that Carrick described as central to United’s attacking build-up. The 19-year-old, who had appeared set for an exit under Ruben Amorim earlier in the season, has emerged as one of the team’s most influential figures.

“He’s a fantastic player, Kobbie,” Carrick said after the final whistle. “It’s pretty obvious to see with the way he’s performing, playing that little bit deeper and connecting the attacks and starting the attacks. He’s having a massive influence on our games. He’s a real joy to have — he wants to learn, he wants to improve, he wants to listen and he expresses himself on the pitch. It’s great to see.”

United’s midfield has undergone significant reconstruction in recent months. Summer arrivals Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba all joined Old Trafford, though Baleba has yet to make his debut due to injury. Santos and Tielemans both featured against Sabah, with Tielemans particularly impressive in the centre of the pitch. Mason Mount also came on in the second half, continuing his return to fitness.

Carrick was asked to explain the tactical philosophy he is trying to embed in United’s engine room. “We’ve got good players, that helps,” he said. “It’s been a little bit on the connections, the combinations, taking the ball and playing close together at times. We’ve got the technical ability to be able to take the ball in the middle of the pitch. That’s what they’re good at, so we’re just trying to play to their strengths.”

The result suggests that blend is beginning to take shape, with United’s new-look midfield showing signs of cohesion that have been absent for much of the campaign.
