Carrick dismisses Neville's unprofessionalism claims with two-word response
Michael Carrick flatly rejected Gary Neville's accusation that several Manchester United players lack professionalism off the pitch, responding 'No, I haven't' when asked if he had witnessed any such behaviour since returning to the club.
Michael Carrick offered a blunt two-word rebuttal to Gary Neville’s scathing assessment of Manchester United’s players, telling reporters at his Thursday press conference that he had seen no evidence of unprofessional behaviour since taking charge.
Neville had launched a pointed attack on unnamed United players following the club’s 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford, questioning their lifestyle choices in a podcast appearance. “There’s a few of them that aren’t that professional,” Neville said. “There are a few of them that don’t go to bed at the right time. Don’t eat the right things. Don’t think about Manchester United every single minute of every single day. They are not living and breathing this football club, as they should be.”
When Neville’s comments were put directly to Carrick, the United manager was unmoved. Asked whether he had encountered any unprofessional conduct since his January appointment, he replied simply: “No, I haven’t, no.” Pressed on whether he was surprised by Neville’s public accusations, Carrick was equally terse: “Gaz says a lot of things.”
No United players have been publicly disciplined for conduct issues since Carrick returned to the club. His predecessors were less fortunate in that regard — both Ruben Amorim and Erik ten Hag faced internal disciplinary matters during their respective tenures, while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, often characterised as a lenient manager, later reflected that “some weren’t as good as their own perception of themselves.”
The backdrop to Neville’s frustration is a United side in alarming form. Despite Carrick overseeing more Premier League points than any other manager during his interim spell last season, the team has managed just two wins from 12 matches in the current campaign. The Bournemouth defeat, which came at Old Trafford, prompted a banner in the Stretford End reading ‘Standards’ — a message Neville said had been a long time coming.
Carrick’s measured deflection suggests he is unwilling to be drawn into a public dispute with the club’s most prominent pundit, but the results on the pitch will ultimately determine how long that composure holds.
