Canterbury chase 22-year NPC drought as SVNS stars set to light up WXV Global Series
Canterbury face Northland in Christchurch on Monday in a historic NPC final, with the hosts seeking their first title since 2004. Across the southern hemisphere, sevens stars from Australia, New Zealand and Scotland are also set to feature prominently in the closing WXV Global Series fixtures.
Canterbury will attempt to end a 22-year wait for the National Provincial Championship title when they host Northland in Christchurch on Monday, in a final that carries historic weight for both sides.
For Canterbury, the drought stretches back to 2004 — the longest gap between titles in the club’s history. Northland’s situation is even more remarkable: the side has won only two titles in its entire history, both in the second division of the competition, in 1977 as North Auckland and again in 1997. A victory on Monday would represent the first top-flight NPC title for the men from the far north.
New Zealand Sevens wing Brady Rush, who has held down the left wing berth throughout the season, is set to start for the visitors. Canterbury will look to sevens alumnus Andrew Knewstubb at flyhalf — the Olympic and Commonwealth Games medallist named to start as the home side bids to finally end their long wait.
The NPC final sits within a broader final fortnight of southern hemisphere rugby, with the WXV Global Series reaching its closing stages across New Zealand, South Africa, Canada, the USA and Japan. The crossover between sevens and XVs in the women’s game means a significant number of SVNS players are set for prominent roles.
In Canberra, the Wallaroos host Scotland in their final fixture of the year, with Australia calling on several sevens-connected players. Australia A Sevens alumna Waiaria Ellis is set to start at flyhalf, while Next Gen 7s star Amelia Whittaker and recent SVNS representative Maya Stewart are named in the back three. SVNS star Piper Simons is among the replacements.
Scotland will counter with Scotland 7s alumni Chloe Rollie at fullback and Helen Nelson at flyhalf, with Team GB sevens player Rhona Lloyd also in the squad.
Beyond the WXV fixtures, preseason and development matches are underway as Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Samoa began their preparations for the SVNS Series in Sydney last week. Several SVNS players are also expected to feature in upcoming Australia A fixtures against the USA, adding further competitive minutes ahead of the series commencing next month.
