Calvert-Lewin's late strike rescues Leeds in 1-1 home draw with Brentford

Dominic Calvert-Lewin rescued Leeds with a 79th-minute equaliser to secure a 1-1 draw against Brentford at Elland Road on Saturday, cancelling out Kevin Schade’s first-half opener in the club’s opening home Premier League game of the season.

Calvert-Lewin steered home his first goal of the season from substitute Lukas Nmecha’s low cross after Leeds had been second best for much of the contest. Schade had given Brentford a deserved lead in the 40th minute, sweeping Keane Lewis-Potter’s cross into the top corner after the home side failed to deal with a succession of deliveries.

Brentford arrived at Elland Road in fine form, having thrashed Tottenham and Birmingham in their opening two fixtures and scored nine goals in the process. They backed that up with a dominant first half, with Igor Thiago, Lewis-Potter, Nathan Collins, and Mikkel Damsgaard all testing goalkeeper James Trafford, who was serenaded with chants of ‘England’s number one’ on his home debut.

Leeds were also forced into an early defensive change when Joe Rodon limped off holding his left hamstring, replaced by recent signing Nico Elvedi, who made his league debut.

Manager Daniel Farke responded at half-time, withdrawing Jaka Bijol and Brenden Aaronson for Ao Tanaka and Harry Wilson — the latter making his home league debut — and switching to a 4-3-3 formation. The adjustments steadied Leeds, with Noah Okafor’s shot saved and James Justin narrowly missing with a low drive.

Brentford continued to threaten through substitute Dango Ouattara and Michael Kayode, but Leeds grew into the game and were rewarded when Nmecha showed persistence to win back possession on the right before picking out Calvert-Lewin at the far post.

The draw extends Leeds’ unbeaten start to the season, following back-to-back wins at Nottingham Forest in the Premier League and Carabao Cup. There is a broader sense of momentum at Elland Road, where redevelopment work on the West Stand — set to increase capacity from 8,000 to 17,500 — began in May.
