Calvert-Lewin equaliser holds Manchester United to sixth straight game without a win
Dominic Calvert-Lewin cancelled out Bryan Mbeumo's opener to earn Leeds United a 1-1 draw at Elland Road, extending Manchester United's winless run to six games and leaving them 13th in the Premier League.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s second-half equaliser condemned Manchester United to a 1-1 draw at Elland Road on Sunday, stretching their winless run to six games in all competitions and leaving Michael Carrick’s side 13th in the Premier League after just one win from seven matches.
United had made a promising start, with Bryan Mbeumo putting them ahead in the 35th minute. But Leeds grew into the game and Calvert-Lewin levelled in the 51st minute, and despite both sides pressing for a winner, neither could find one.
Speaking after the final whistle, Calvert-Lewin suggested the result could have been worse for United. “I think we could’ve played with a bit more quality in the final third, particularly in the first half,” he said. “We were getting good quality in the box but just not enough numbers. We made sure in the second half we came out with more confidence going forward. I think we were unlucky not to win the game.”
The striker also addressed United’s decision to mirror Leeds’ formation, a tactical move that drew attention given last season’s 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford — a game in which two early goals from Noah Okafor proved decisive. “They tried to match us up formation-wise,” Calvert-Lewin said. “Not surprised, given what happened last season. They were probably looking at our physical output and the way we liked to play and tried to go man-for-man. It took us a little bit to adjust to it, but I don’t think it was too difficult to adjust. It was more down to us and maybe a lack of quality in the final third.”
For United, the draw continues a deeply concerning run of form. Carrick’s side have now failed to win in six consecutive matches, and their single league victory from seven outings leaves them marooned in the bottom half of the table. The pressure will only intensify as they return to action midweek, travelling to face Como in the Champions League.
