Paris Brunner is facing a suspension threat after mimicking a throat-cutting gesture toward the Strasbourg crowd on Saturday during AS Monaco’s 0-1 victory at Racing Club de Strasbourg.

The 19-year-old German striker had just scored the match’s only goal, a decisive finish that extends his excellent start to the season. However, his celebration, directed at the Alsatian stands, immediately sparked controversy. The National Ethics Council (CNE) has referred the matter to the Ligue de football professionnel (LFP) disciplinary commission, which must now rule on his case.

“It appears to us that the player’s gesture could constitute a breach of the exemplarity principle set out in the ethics charter,” said CNE president Frédéric Thiriez. He clarified, however, that “it is the disciplinary commission that will assess the facts and determine whether a sanction is warranted.”

Depending on the classification—whether his conduct is deemed “excessive / inappropriate” or “intimidating / threatening”—Brunner could face between one and four match suspensions.

After the match, the player attempted to explain his gesture. “They spoke about my family, my mother, my father. I could see them,” he said regarding supporters who allegedly insulted him. “After the goal, there were a lot of emotions. I didn’t want to be disrespectful. It was in the heat of the moment. I wouldn’t say I regret it, but it’s not the message I wanted to send. It was misunderstood. What I meant to say was: ‘what a goal, it’s over.’”

The LFP disciplinary commission must now weigh the player’s account against the perceived severity of the gesture, in a context where provocative celebrations are subject to increased scrutiny.
