Brazil name 28-strong squad for WXV Global Series Challenger with 2029 World Cup in sight

Brazil head coach Guilherme Coghetto has confirmed a 28-player squad for the 2026 WXV Global Series Challenger in Hong Kong, with the tournament serving as a key building block toward the country’s 2029 Women’s Rugby World Cup qualification campaign.

The squad includes 16 players who represented As Yaras at last year’s Women’s Rugby World Cup in England, alongside 11 athletes with Olympic Games experience. Brazil will face Hong Kong China, the Netherlands and Spain across three consecutive weekends in September — a first-ever meeting with the hosts, while they have previously played the Netherlands five times and Spain once.

Coghetto was clear that development, not results, is the primary objective in Hong Kong. “The tournament in Hong Kong is another important step in building the squad that will eventually aim to qualify for our second World Cup appearance,” he said. “We are looking toward the team’s long-term development for the 2029 World Cup.”

“The qualifiers are coming up next year, so we are in a crucial process of building our team and defining our style of play. We aren’t thinking about results; we’re thinking about the evolution of our game. That’s what really counts. We know we have a good chance of winning these matches, but the final score isn’t the most important thing. What matters is that we improve.”
