Benzema leaves Al-Hilal, major announcement on his future expected in coming days
After terminating his contract with Al-Hilal by mutual agreement, Karim Benzema is set to reveal the next chapter of his career. According to journalist Bertrand Latour, an announcement is imminent — retirement or a new club.
Karim Benzema is now without a club after mutually terminating his contract with Al-Hilal, the Saudi formation he had joined in January from Al-Ittihad. At 38 years old, the 2022 Ballon d’Or winner is now free to sign with any club he wishes — or to hang up his boots for good.
It was journalist Bertrand Latour who broke the news Thursday evening on Late Football Club. “Epilogue in very few days. This is not a hunch, it’s information,” he declared, without specifying the nature of the forthcoming announcement.
Several scenarios remain on the table. Benzema could choose to continue in Saudi Arabia, where he remains one of the ambassadors of the Saudi Pro League. MLS and the Turkish championship constitute other possible avenues for the former Real Madrid striker. A return to Olympique Lyonnais, the club that developed him and whose supporters nurture the dream, is however judged out of reach by observers.
The hypothesis of retirement cannot be ruled out either. After a career crowned by a European championship title with Real Madrid in 2022 and a Ballon d’Or the same year, Benzema could choose to retire on that record. The answer should not be long in coming.
