Scholes declares Fernandes 'finished' at United as Carrick plots recall for Chelsea clash
Paul Scholes has called Bruno Fernandes' Manchester United career over and urged him to move to Saudi Arabia, while manager Michael Carrick is reportedly set to restore the captain to his starting XI against Chelsea after an internal truce.
Paul Scholes has declared Bruno Fernandes’ Manchester United career finished and called on the Portugal captain to leave European football for the Saudi Pro League, as manager Michael Carrick prepares to recall him for Saturday’s Premier League fixture at Stamford Bridge.
Scholes was unsparing in his assessment of the fallout between Fernandes and Carrick, branding the midfielder’s public criticism of the manager’s tactics “unforgivable” and questioning whether any club could trust him with the captaincy again.
“What Bruno Fernandes said last week, I think that’s unforgivable,” Scholes said. “How can Bruno Fernandes be trusted to be captain of any team he ever goes to now? I think he probably needs to get away from European football and just go to Saudi, just get out the way. I don’t think any manager, any member of staff can trust him after that.”
Fernandes was dropped to the bench for United’s 3-0 defeat at Bournemouth on Sunday after publicly criticising Carrick’s tactics in the wake of a 4-1 thrashing by Como four days earlier — a rare act of public dissent that sharpened an already volatile atmosphere at Old Trafford.
Despite that, The Athletic reports that Carrick, Fernandes, and senior staff have agreed to draw a line under the dispute, with the midfielder potentially returning to the starting XI against Chelsea. Prior to his omission at Bournemouth, Fernandes had played every minute of United’s Premier League campaign.
Carrick himself is operating under acute pressure. The back-to-back three-goal defeats extended United’s winless run to eight matches and left the club a single point above the relegation zone. On Monday, co-owners Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Avram Glazer, and Joel Glazer held a high-level conference call with chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox to discuss the manager’s future. Carrick was officially granted a stay of execution on Tuesday, but the reprieve is widely understood to be conditional on a convincing result at Stamford Bridge.
The Chelsea fixture now represents a crossroads for both men: for Fernandes, a chance to salvage his standing at the club; for Carrick, potentially the last opportunity to preserve his tenure.
