Paris Saint-Germain are nearing a contract extension with Désir Doué, closing the door on Arsenal’s reported interest in the 21-year-old winger. The Gunners had been monitoring the Frenchman as they assessed potential attacking reinforcements, but were told earlier this year that Doué had no intention of leaving the club — and those advanced renewal talks now confirm that stance.

Doué joined PSG from Rennes in 2024 and has flourished under Luis Enrique, playing a prominent role in the club’s attack as they won back-to-back Champions League titles. His current contract runs until 2029, and the new deal is expected to tie him to the Parc des Princes beyond that. Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester City had all reportedly retained slim hopes of signing him, but those have now all but evaporated.

The update arrives at a difficult moment for Arsenal, who were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by League Two side Fleetwood Town on Tuesday — going behind, equalising through Viktor Gyökeres, and ultimately losing on penalties. The defeat has compounded scrutiny around the squad’s depth and quality, particularly in attack, making the Doué news a further setback for Mikel Arteta’s recruitment plans.

Gyökeres himself is under the spotlight after former Premier League striker Emile Heskey offered a candid assessment of the Swede’s debut season at the Emirates. The 28-year-old was signed in the summer of 2025 for £64 million to fill the clinical centre-forward role Arsenal had long sought, but has managed just one goal in 11 appearances this term — many of them off the bench — and has fallen behind Kai Havertz in the pecking order.

Despite that underwhelming return, Heskey stopped short of calling for a sale, arguing that Gyökeres remains a valuable squad option and that Arteta should persist with him for now. The striker did finish as Arsenal’s top scorer in their title-winning campaign last season, which provides some context for the patience being urged around him.

Arsenal head to Anfield on Sunday level on points with league leaders Manchester City, making the result of their Carabao Cup exit all the more important to park quickly.
