England qualified for the World Cup quarter-finals by defeating Mexico 3-2 on Sunday in Mexico City in a Round of 16 match marked by two penalties, a red card and a Jude Bellingham brace.

For nearly half an hour, the Three Lions were under pressure. Jordan Pickford kept a clean sheet with several decisive saves, including a spectacular stop on a diving header from Raul Jimenez in the 15th minute. Mexican dominance did not pay off: Bellingham opened the scoring on a cross from Bukayo Saka (36th), then doubled the lead on a service from Harry Kane before the break (0-2).

Julian Quinones revived Mexico before half-time with a volley from a Roberto Alvarado free kick. The second half immediately turned: the deserved red card for Jarell Quansah (54th) left England with ten men for the rest of the match. Far from retreating, Thomas Tuchel’s side extended their lead with a penalty converted by Kane (60th), a decision that sparked controversy on the Mexican side.

Raul Jimenez reduced the deficit a second time from the penalty spot (66th), but Mexican attacks in the final quarter of an hour were not enough to overturn the result. England, laborious since the start of the tournament, delivers its best performance and will face Erling Haaland’s Norway in the quarter-finals.
