Jordan Henderson was carried off the pitch on a stretcher and given oxygen at Estadio Azteca after an incident during England’s post-match celebrations following their 3-2 World Cup round-of-16 win over Mexico.
The Brentford midfielder had been an unused substitute throughout the match but joined his teammates in front of the travelling England supporters after the final whistle. Henderson fell over the advertising hoardings while fans sang Wonderwall, and medical staff attended to him on the pitch.
England captain Harry Kane offered an initial assessment after the game: “Jordan just fell over there, I think he’s OK, just something to do with his arm.”
Jude Bellingham added: “He’s in a bit of bother, but our medical team have got everything under control. It’s probably not best to give too much detail because I don’t really know too much what’s going on, but everyone’s there to support him and even that was a beautiful thing to see.”
Further details on Henderson’s condition were not available at the time of writing. The 34-year-old has featured just once at this World Cup, coming off the bench for the final six minutes of England’s group-stage win over Panama with qualification already secured.
The match itself was a dramatic affair. England twice opened up a two-goal lead — through a quickfire first-half double from Bellingham and a Kane penalty — only to be pegged back on both occasions. Jarell Quansah’s straight red card just before the hour made for a tense finale, but Thomas Tuchel’s side held on to advance.
England will now face Norway in the quarter-finals on Saturday, after Erling Haaland scored both goals in Norway’s 2-1 victory over Brazil.
