Bella Mir vows to protect her brain after watching father Frank's health decline

Bella Mir has made her long-term health a priority after watching her father Frank Mir’s body deteriorate following an 18-year UFC career, telling The Ariel Helwani Show that she has no desire to replicate the punishment he absorbed across 32 professional fights.

The 23-year-old spoke candidly about Frank’s current condition, describing a man whose body has been worn down by years of elite competition. “He’s been in so many wars before, his brain is not good today,” Mir said. “I feel like it’s really been catching up to him and I’d like to try to get fast finishes and not have wars like that.”

She went further in detailing the physical cost her father has paid. “He’s had his neck fused, he’s had his lower back fused, he’s had his hip replacement, his knee replacement. Both his labrums in his shoulders are completely gone,” she said. “There’s times where he’s needing a cane because he can’t walk that much.”

The remarks came in the wake of Bella’s own first professional loss, a decision defeat to Alex Apodaca on Dana White’s Contender Series — her fifth MMA fight. The loss drew attention online because of an eerie parallel with Frank’s early career: both won their first fight by decision, their next three by first-round submission, and then dropped their fifth. Bella said she was unaware of the pattern until she saw it highlighted on Instagram. “I hope that we don’t have the exact career all the way through,” she said, “because I want to fight for a long time and not have so much brain damage.”

Frank Mir retired in 2019 with a 19-13 record, 10 of those losses coming by knockout. He became UFC heavyweight champion at 25 when he dethroned Tim Sylvia, later captured an interim title in 2008, and challenged for the undisputed belt twice more before a motorcycle accident and the accumulating damage of elite competition ultimately ended his run.

Bella, who won an NCAA Division I wrestling title for North Central College in March, is still pursuing a dual goal of Olympic competition and a UFC contract. Despite the Contender Series setback, she remains focused on a path that prioritises longevity. “I don’t know if I want to have 32 fights,” she said. “I want to be able to function afterwards completely normal.”
