Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany hospitalised after collapsing at training
Vincent Kompany was taken to hospital on Friday after collapsing during a Bayern Munich training session. The 40-year-old had already been battling a virus ahead of Bayern's Champions League tie against Arsenal.
Vincent Kompany was hospitalised on Friday after collapsing while watching Bayern Munich’s reserve team train, with the club confirming the 40-year-old manager will remain in medical care and undergo thorough examination.
Kompany had been struggling with a virus in the days leading up to Bayern’s Champions League clash with Arsenal, leaving him needing assistance on stairs and forcing him to miss the pre-match press conference. He was well enough to take his place on the touchline for the match itself, but his condition deteriorated sharply at the training ground.
“Vincent Kompany had to seek medical treatment on Friday after collapsing during training for FC Bayern’s amateurs,” the Bundesliga club said in a statement. “The first-team coach had been watching the second team’s session. Kompany will undergo thorough examination in the hospital and remain in medical care. For the time being, his coaching staff will manage training and match operations.”
Bayern sporting director Max Eberl moved quickly to reassure supporters, stressing that the club’s immediate focus is entirely on Kompany’s wellbeing. “The health of Vincent Kompany is our utmost priority,” Eberl said. “At FC Bayern, we will do everything to ensure he recovers quickly. Vinnie is receiving all necessary medical care and support, as well as all the time he needs. His coaching team, which we fully trust, will take over his duties. All of us at FC Bayern wish Vinnie a speedy recovery.”
Kompany, who took charge at the Allianz Arena ahead of the 2024-25 season after leaving Burnley, has no further details on the nature of his illness beyond the virus reported earlier in the week. The club has not indicated a timeline for his return to the dugout.
