Ballon d'Or 2026: Eight PSG players barred from London ceremony by Ligue 1 clash
The rescheduling of PSG's Ligue 1 match against Olympique Lyonnais to Monday evening, the same night as the Ballon d'Or 2026 ceremony in London, forces eight Paris players and manager Luis Enrique to remain in Paris, despite several being among the nominees.
Eight Paris Saint-Germain players and manager Luis Enrique will be unable to attend the Ballon d’Or 2026 ceremony, held Monday evening at London Palladium, due to the rescheduling of their Ligue 1 match against Olympique Lyonnais at the same time at Parc des Princes (kick-off at 20:30).
The LFP had initially scheduled this Matchday 8 clash for Sunday evening before pushing it back one day, creating a direct conflict with football’s annual showcase. The scenario echoes last year, when OM-PSG took place on Ballon d’Or night, already preventing several Paris players from attending the ceremony.
Among those forced to miss the event are Matvey Safonov, nominated among the best goalkeepers, Warren Zaïre-Emery, in contention for young player of the year, as well as Achraf Hakimi, Joao Neves, Willian Pacho, Fabian Ruiz, Ferran Torres and Vitinha. Luis Enrique, himself a candidate for best manager, will also be retained in Paris.
The situation is more nuanced for the club’s injured players. Ousmane Dembélé, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Marquinhos and Nuno Mendes — all four nominated among the 30 finalists — could in theory make the trip to London, their unavailability for the match theoretically leaving them free to attend the ceremony.
The sporting stakes of the encounter make any compromise impossible: PSG and OL find themselves co-leaders of the championship, and such a context rules out any arrangement from the outset. The presence of Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, the club’s president, remains uncertain — London or Paris, the choice is his.
