Barcelos speaks from hospital bed after collapsing in fifth round at UFC Vegas 121

Raoni Barcelos addressed fans from a hospital bed on Monday, nearly 48 hours after collapsing unconscious in the fifth round of his bantamweight main event against Raul Rosas Jr. at UFC Vegas 121 in Las Vegas. Rosas Jr. was awarded a technical knockout victory, ending Barcelos’s five-fight winning streak.

The 39-year-old Brazilian veteran had been ahead on the scorecards and appeared on course for a decision win when he passed out in the clinch and required immediate medical attention before being transported to a local hospital. Speaking in Portuguese in the short video clip, Barcelos moved quickly to ease concern.

“I’m here to send you a message and let you know that I’m doing well,” Barcelos said. “I’m doing really well and undergoing all the exams here at the hospital. This is just the hospital’s protocol, so I have to go through all of them. I want to thank everyone for all the prayers and all the kind messages. Please keep sending that positive energy.”

Despite the manner of the defeat, Barcelos was defiant about the effort he put into the fight and philosophical about the outcome.

“I gave everything I had inside that cage,” he said. “Like I said before, I was only leaving that cage if I was carried out, and that’s exactly how it happened. It wasn’t the way I wanted it to be. I wanted to become champion and leave with the victory, but God knows everything.”

Barcellos closed with a promise to return. “I’ll be back, and I’ll come back stronger,” he said. “Thank you so much for everything. Let’s keep moving forward.”

The loss is the first setback for Barcelos since 2022 and snaps a run of five consecutive wins that had positioned him as a legitimate contender in the UFC’s bantamweight division.
