Manchester United’s years-long pursuit of Frenkie de Jong has received a fresh impetus, with Barcelona under pressure to raise funds in the January transfer window to strengthen their defence.

According to reports in Spain, Barcelona sporting director Deco has identified defensive reinforcement as a priority for the second half of the season. The club spent €174 million on signings during the summer while generating only €104 million in transfer and economic-rights revenue, leaving them needing to sell before they can buy. La Liga has set Barcelona’s squad cost limit at €582 million for the 2026/27 season — up from the €432 million ceiling applied after the previous winter window — and the club’s planning for the current campaign is described as incomplete.

De Jong, 29, has not featured at all this season after sustaining a knee ligament injury during the Netherlands’ World Cup campaign. He is nearing a return and is set to be assessed by Barcelona’s medical staff after the international break, but faces a significant challenge to reclaim his place in a side that began the season with seven wins from seven.

United’s interest in the Dutch midfielder stretches back to his time at Ajax, and the club was credited with a serious approach as recently as 2024, when De Jong’s contract was approaching its final two years. He subsequently signed an extension keeping him at the Camp Nou until 2029, appearing to close the door on a move. Barcelona’s current financial position may force it open again.

De Jong joined Barcelona from Ajax in 2019 and has made close to 300 appearances for the club, winning three La Liga titles. He has earned 70 caps for the Netherlands and started all six of their matches at the World Cup, where they were eliminated on penalties by Morocco — De Jong having been substituted during extra time.

He will miss the start of the Netherlands’ Nations League fixtures this month and next as he continues his recovery.
