Barcelona join Bayern Munich in pursuit of Newcastle's Anthony Gordon
Barcelona have entered talks with Newcastle over Anthony Gordon, joining Bayern Munich in the race to sign the England international. The 25-year-old is valued at around £75 million, with Liverpool also long-term admirers.
Barcelona have registered their interest in Anthony Gordon, with the Press Association reporting that the Spanish champions have entered talks with Newcastle over the 25-year-old England international. Bayern Munich had already made their move for the forward, and Liverpool are also long-term admirers, meaning Gordon is now being pursued by three of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Gordon joined Newcastle from Everton for £45 million in January 2023 and has since become a central figure in the club’s resurgence. His valuation is reported to be in the region of £75 million, though a competitive bidding war between multiple elite clubs could push that figure considerably higher.
Despite returning 17 goals this season — 10 of them in the Champions League, including one against Barcelona — Gordon’s influence at St James’ Park has been seen to wane amid persistent transfer speculation. Head coach Eddie Howe omitted the forward from his squad on his return from injury, citing a need to focus on the future, a decision widely interpreted as a signal that his time at the club may be drawing to a close.
Gordon was suspended for the 2024-25 Carabao Cup final, which Newcastle won to end a 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy, but his performances across the campaign were considered a driving force in the club’s run to that success. His attacking partnership with Alexander Isak — who moved to Liverpool for £130 million last summer — and Jacob Murphy had been one of the more effective combinations in the Premier League during that period.
Newcastle’s qualification for this season’s Champions League adds further context to the transfer picture. Losing Gordon would represent a significant blow to a club still establishing itself among Europe’s elite, but the financial offer on the table and the player’s apparent openness to a move abroad may prove difficult to resist.
