Barcelona and Bayern Munich move for Anthony Gordon, complicating Liverpool's summer plans

Liverpool’s pursuit of Anthony Gordon is under serious threat after Barcelona entered direct talks with Newcastle United over the England winger, with Bayern Munich also registering strong interest in the 25-year-old.

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that Barcelona sporting director Deco made a recent trip to the UK with discussions over Gordon as the primary purpose of his visit. Romano wrote: “Barcelona are in direct club to club talks with Newcastle for Anthony Gordon. The player is keen on the move but more clubs are also on it.”

The development complicates Liverpool’s summer planning considerably. Arne Slot’s side finished fifth in the Premier League this season, 25 points behind title winners Arsenal, and face the added challenge of replacing Mohamed Salah, who is set to leave the club. Gordon had been identified as a potential attacking reinforcement.

Beyond Barcelona’s approach, Bayern Munich are also said to be keen on Gordon, while Chelsea and other Premier League clubs have the Newcastle winger on their radar. The level of competition from clubs of that stature makes a Liverpool move increasingly difficult to complete.

Gordon’s potential departure from Newcastle would also carry an added layer of sensitivity given the clubs’ recent transfer history. Liverpool and Newcastle were involved in a fractious battle over Alexander Isak last summer, with the Reds ultimately signing the Swedish striker from St. James’ Park. Newcastle would likely be reluctant to sanction another high-profile sale to Liverpool so soon after that episode.

Gordon, who has Everton connections despite now being a key figure on Tyneside, is valued at €60 million by Transfermarkt. He is next due in action for England in a friendly against New Zealand on 6 June.
